Happy Birthday Noam Chomsky 82 on the 7th December

Here is a quote from him.

“The core of the anarchist tradition, as I understand it, is that power is always illegitimate, unless it proves itself to be legitimate. So the burden of proof is always on those who claim that some authoritarian hierarchic relation is legitimate. If they can’t prove it, then it should be dismantled. ... There’s a very heavy burden of proof to be borne by anyone who calls for violence. Maybe it can be sometimes justified. Personally, I’m not a committed pacifist, so I think that, yes, it can sometimes be justified.”
— UC Berkeley Institute of International Studies interview with Noam Chomsky, March 2002

You may not like this quotation, if so please search the web and find one more to your liking. He is a clever man and has said a lot of clever things. He must have said something that you like.

Another quotation this month is from the introduction to a book by Colin Ward from his book Influences: Voices of Creative Dissent.

"In 1942,in the the darkest and most bellicose days of the second world war, he (the Daily Mirror's Cassandra columnist Bill Connor) chose to remind readers of the unseen influences that preserve us all:
‘Our children are guarded from diphtheria by what a Japanese and a German did. They are saved from smallpox by an Englishman’s work. They are saved from rabies because of a Frenchman. From birth to death they are surrounded by an invisible host – the spirits of men who never served a lesser loyalty than the welfare of mankind.’"

Have you seen the film "White Christmas"?

If you have, you might instead watch these on the internet.

The War You Don't See
John Pilger investigates the media's role in war. He traces the history of 'embedded' and independent reporting from the carnage of WWI to the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

This is horrifying in every sense of the word. It went out at 10.35 when children may have gone to bed.

Capitalism Hits the Fan - Richard Wolff
This is by an American Marxian economist. It is aimed at an American audience but I found it fascinating and rivetting.
